EV charging

Plan an EV charger around the home and electrical service

Panel capacity, circuit routing, charger location, weather exposure, permits, utility requirements, and future charging needs.

Short answer

Start with the vehicle and charger requirements, parking location, cable reach, and daily charging need. An electrician should evaluate the service, panel, available capacity, circuit route, grounding, protection, and installation environment.

Signs to document

  • no suitable existing circuit
  • panel appears full
  • long route from panel to parking
  • outdoor or detached-garage location
  • more than one present or planned EV

Questions for a provider

  • How was available electrical capacity evaluated?
  • Is load management an option?
  • What trenching, patching, permit, or utility work is excluded?
  • Will the installation support a future vehicle or second charger?

Compare the written scope

Diagnosis, access, repair, and closeout are different decisions.

Diagnosis

Ask what test isolated the fault and what evidence supports the recommendation. A symptom alone does not identify every underlying cause.

Included work

Confirm labor, materials, model numbers, permits, access, disposal, cleanup, startup, and any walls, floors, landscaping, or finishes that another trade must restore.

Closeout

Request invoices, warranty terms, permit or inspection records when applicable, equipment settings, test results, and clear instructions for operation and maintenance.
